Who am I?
Hello! I’m Luis Reyes and I’m a photographer based in Napa valley. I’ve been using photography as a way to express myself for a couple years and have been helping out with event photography.
My journey began when I was stuck at home with lots of heavy feelings. I didn’t have an outlet for expressing things feelings and ultimately processing them. I’m fortunate that my parents had a camera around the house and I began to take snapshots of things that peaked my interest. As time went on the things I wanted to photograph became more and more conceptual. As a result I spent more and more time learning photography and including heavy editing. In my 2021 beginnings you can see a gradual change in heavy post-processing using photoshop, something I’m super proud to be able to comfortably use now. I always love having a personal project on the side which helps me expand my toolset and experience in photography & post-processing.
I previously mentioned my parents having the spare camera around and truthfully they’ve played a massive role in my interest in photography. My mom has been recording quinceñeras and weddings for over 30 years now in both Mexico and here in the US. Growing up I didn’t have an interest in being too involved in it but once I began taking pictures for myself, I thought helping out in the events would progress my photography experience and expertise. I’ve been helping them for a few years now, starting as a backup (just in case) photographer to being the main photographer at times. I can say I’ve gotten better after every event and hope to continue photographing events in the future.
Why pursue photography?
Being born in the 2000s, seeing photos of everything has been normal my entire life. Growing up I never saw the importance of the photographer and their work as it became normalized for everyone to have their own camera in their pocket. It didn’t seem like anything special to me. I’ve taken art and photography history classes which has opened my eyes and made me appreciate photography and art as a whole. I understand the importance of showing the world through your own eyes by using art as the means of communication. I love being able to see others creative projects or even when they’re just documenting their community/life because of the little peek of their life we get to see. I hope my personal projects can do that for others too. Creating personal projects has also made me more observant of the world around me, even if I don’t have my camera with me, I tend to observe the world and see little things I would have otherwise looked over.
Documenting and photographing events for others is a euphoric experience. I love that I’m able to share an intimate moment in a families life and get to know them through it while simultaneously documenting the event. Seeing the families reaction to my photos is also a big bonus for me because I know how much it means for them to see their snippets of their big day immortalized in the photos.
